SUCCESS STORIES
A new breed of high-efficiency hydrogen fuel cells designed by Horizon Fuel Cell
Technologies has propelled two student teams from Singapore, NUS and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, to the
regional champions podium at the Shell Ecomarathon Asia.

The high-profile event took place on July 6-9 at the F1 circuit in Sepang, Malaysia, and brought together 94
student teams from 12 countries all over Asia, and challenges youth to design and build energy efficient vehicles that travel the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel.
The E-Mobility Class Hydrogen Award was won by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic in the Prototype category and by
the National University of Singapore in the Urban Concept category. The NP-Distanza Proto team from the
Ngee Ann Polytechnic also set a new record in its class of 84.9 km/kWh.
The winning teams this year experimented with Horizon's new 1kW hydrogen power solution, a highly
efficient, compact fuel cell system that weighs only 3.6kg. Similar power systems can be designed into zero
emission, hydrogen-electric vehicles of the future, and Horizon is clearly starting an innovation movement
here in the region: "This year saw close to 10 competition-grade hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles
designed by student teams from a number of different Asian countries" said Taras Wankewycz, Horizon's cofounder.
"We are extremely proud of the results achieved this year and will strive to do even better next
year."
The Fuel Cell Vehicle Team from UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) has inspired teams from across Asia and around the world. Overcoming many obstacles and against all odds, they triumphantly brought home the much coveted title of Champion of the Fuel Cell Powered Prototype Class.
"Our strategy was to use the lightest fuel cell system, with the most efficient hydrogen consumption." says Joseph Koh, UTM team advisor. "We chose Horizon's system for its unbeatable performance."
Competing in the same event, Dr Werachet's team from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Thailand also faced many challenges during the race. This was the first time this team installed a hydrogen fuel cell onto their powertrain. Thanks to Horizon's plug & play fuel cell design, not only did they qualify for the runs, but they managed to compete and finish 3rd in the competition!
Make your own success story now!
...with Horizon's new H-1000XP fuel cell
- Efficient: greatly reduced H2 fuel consumption
- plug & play, easy to integrate!
- lower weight, smaller size - new materials...
- compliant with new 2011 Eco-marathon rules

Horizon has 2 types of solutions available to Eco-marathon participants:
1. STANDARD Horizon PEM fuel cells & electronic controls
These stacks are already the most compact and lightweight systems compared to other alternatives in the market,
and can already help you to significantly increase your advantage. When choosing this option and with your
guidance, our technical team will help you adapt our standard electronics to meet Eco-marathon rules& regulations
requirements. We can also provide advisory on car design and integration to maximize eficiency. Our standard
solution are specified in Horizon's H-series fuel cell brochure.
2. EXTREME PERFORMANCE customized PEM fuel cell systems
30-50% weight and size reduction over standard Horizon PEM fuel cells (described above) for the same power output.
Using premium materials and a new architecture, this choice comes at a higher price but will greatly increase your
ability to outperform at the race, since you will have on-board, one of the best performing and most efficient PEM
fuel cell stacks available!

With continuous improvement taking place over the past 5 years, Horizon is now able to produce the world's lightest and most compact fuel cell systems, with limited need for heavy and cumbersome peripheral equipment. If you plan to compete in the next eco-marathon, compare your options - and enquire today about the technical Horizon can offer your team!
